Reintroducing extirpated herbivores could partially reverse the late Quaternary decline of large and grazing species

چکیده
Aim Reinstating large, native herbivores is an essential component of ecological restoration efforts, as these taxa can be important drivers processes. However, many herbivore species have gone globally or regionally extinct during the last 50,000 years, leaving simplified assemblages and trophically downgraded ecosystems. Here, we discuss to what extent trophic rewilding undo changes by reinstating herbivores. Location Global. Time period We report functional trait from Late Pleistocene present, estimated under future scenarios. Major studied Wild, large (≥ 10 kg), terrestrial, mammalian Methods use a dataset containing all late Quaternary ≥ kg look at in body mass diet composition assemblages, proxy for species’ effects. First, assess how traits changed present. Next, quantify current would change if extant, wild were restored their ranges (and no replacements used), exploring scenarios with different baselines. Results Defaunation has primarily removed grazing extant across reverse changes, especially when them prehistoric distributions. It partially restore pre-anthropogenic conditions. absence complementary interventions (e.g., introducing replacements), remain down-sized browser dominated, relative Main conclusions Many terrestrial assemblages—and hence ecosystems—would downgraded, even after bringing back Therefore, required achieve complete restoration. Nevertheless, our findings suggest that reintroducing remaining diversify herbivory disturbances assemblages.

Investigation of the effects and evidence of late Quaternary glaciers on the Binaloud Heights
The purpose of this study was to identify evidence of late Quaternary glaciers in the northern highlands of Binalood. Topographic maps, satellite imagery and climatic data are the tools and data used in this study. Arc gis 10.4 software was used for data analysis. Quaternary glacier evidences were identified based on four types of evidences including morphic indices, climatic evidences, geomorp...
متن کاملThe late Quaternary decline and extinction of palms on oceanic Pacific islands
Late Quaternary palaeoecological records of palm decline, extirpation and extinction are explored from the oceanic islands of the Pacific Ocean. Despite the severe reduction of faunal diversity coincidental with human colonisation of these previously uninhabited oceanic islands, relatively few plant extinctions have been recorded. At low taxonomic levels, recent faunal extinctions on oceanic is...

15 صفحه اولReintroducing resurrected species: selecting DeExtinction candidates.
Technological advances have raised the controversial prospect of resurrecting extinct species. Species DeExtinction should involve more than the production of biological orphans to be scrutinized in the laboratory or zoo. If DeExtinction is to realize its stated goals of deep ecological enrichment, then resurrected animals must be translocated (i.e., released within suitable habitat). Therefore...
